The event is made more poignant this year by the centenary of the start of the Great War.

Standards will be proudly displayed in processions at both Rye and Battle while there will be wreath laying ceremonies and services taking place at many parish churches across the district.

The Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex is to take part in Battle’s Remembrance Day service as an honoured guest of Battle Royal British Legion.

The church parade assembles at Market Square on Sunday ready for the march off at 10.10am. It arrives at St Mary’s Church at approximately 10.30am and all attending the service should have taken their pews by 10.40am.

The High Street will be closed at 10am and 12 noon.

Dignitaries and honoured guests will have their places reserved for them, as will all organisations taking place.

The Lord Lieutenant, who is representing the Queen, will arrive in time for the service to commence at 10.45am.

The order of service will be conducted by the Dean of Battle, the Very Reverend Canon John Edmondson.

Ian Cheveralls, from Battle Royal British Legion, said: “ Following the service will be the reading of names of our fallen comrades for the past 100 years at the same time as wreaths by the cadets of the Air Training Corps.”

Following the reading of names and wreath laying the parade will reform and return to Market Square.

All who attend the church service on November 9 will have a Booklet of Remembrance given to them to keep containing the names of the 221 fallen from 1914 - 2014.

Ian Cheveralls said: “This is a gift. We have aimed in this booklet to appeal to the younger generation interested in the past and for them to be able to hand this to their children,”

On Tuesday 11 November at 10.50am there will be an assembly for the firing of the maroon by Battel Bonfire Boyes, as in past years.

There will be a sounding of the Last Post and Reville.

At Rye, a processions sets off from Market Street at 10.35am, and will take the Mayor’s salute at Rye Town Hall.

It is followed by a service at Mary’s Church at 10.55 am. This will be followed by a service around the War Memorial.

The Pett district Branch of the Royal British Legion will be holding their Remembrance Service and Parade at St. Nicholas Church, Pett, starting at 1030. The service will be taken by the Rev. Frank Rowson.
