Rother residents urged to sign up for energy scheme

Residents in Rother are being urged to join a collective energy switching scheme – and save money on their household fuel bills.

Rother District Council is backing the Big Community Switch, which allows people to register as part of a group of residents, in order to get a better deal from gas and electricity suppliers.

People register their interest online, and energy firms are then invited to bid against each other to offer the cheapest deal to all those who have expressed an interest.

If they accept, residents will have the switching process taken care of for them, offering a simple, hassle-free transition to their new supplier.

Cllr Carl Maynard, Rother District Council leader, said: “For most of us, our gas and electricity bills account for a very large percentage of our household income.

“People often pay more than they need to, and may be put off switching to a cheaper supplier because they believe it will involve a lot of stress and hassle.

“The beauty of this scheme is it takes all the hassle out of changing suppliers, and the collective switching process means they’re likely to get a good deal.”

Anyone interested in switching will need to provide their name and address and details of their current electricity supplier, tariff and energy consumption – information which is available on their latest bill.

People have until Monday, February 1 2016 to apply, with an auction held on the following day to find the company offering the best price to supply energy to the registered households.

The company behind the scheme, iChoosr, will calculate how much could be saved and contact everyone registered with an offer. If they decide to switch they have until Monday, March 14 to do so.

There is no obligation to accept the offer from the winning energy company and people’s details will not be shared with the new supplier unless they choose to switch.
