Royal British Legion branch on the look out for helpers

Branch chairman Lewis Whittaker said the group had lots planned for the rest of the year, but more help was needed.

“One very important fact is that the committee are not getting any younger and we really would like some fresh blood to assist, so if you would like to come forward with any offer it would be really appreciated,” he pointed out.

Information on activities, which are open to all, is updated on notice boards around Steyning.

The successful poppy painting competition will be repeated later this year, offering prizes to primary schools in the area, judged by the Steyning Arts Group.

Patricia Gill, one of the arts group members, has offered to complete and donate a painting of poppies for the Poppy Appeal.

Mr Whittaker said: “This is indeed a very generous offer and will be presented some time during August. We will be running a lottery for this painting, together with other prizes during the autumn. The prize draw will take place on Monday, November 17, at our Poppy Appeal festival lunch.”

Horsham Royal British Legion Band will visit the Steyning Centre on Sunday, October 26, for the concert, A Tribute to Our Forces.

Poppy Appeal collections will include a stall at Steyning Farmers’ Market on Saturday, November 1, and a collection in High Street by branch members and Army cadets.

Mr Whittaker said: “As ever, local businesses are coming to the fore with financial assistance. They are truly wonderful and, of course, the support we get from everyone in the area continues. We are extremely grateful for all the help.”

The poppy motif in Steyning Memorial Garden will be replaced later this year, having become discoloured due to the effects of UV radiation.
