Royal Naval Association bows out on Sunday

The Lewes branch of the Royal Naval Association, which has been in Lewes for nearly 60 years is disbanding because of a shortage of members.

The group, which is made up of current and ex-servicemen and women, and family and friends, holds its final service on Sunday at St Thomas' Church.

The association was formed in 1945 and, with the exception of a three year closure in the early 1960s, has been running ever since.

Beryl Jackson, the honorary secretary of the Lewes branch of the association said: 'It's sad but unfortunately time and the Good Lord has decreased our numbers.

'We do have other members but illness, age or commitments means they have difficulties attending the meetings.'

The association goes out in style on Sunday and will be joined by representatives from other Lewes organisations.

The final act of the Lewes RNA will be to hand over the ship's bell to cadets from the training ship Lewes.

In today's print version of the Express we incorrectly state that this event took place last Sunday. Our apologies.
