'˜Royalty' helps launch In Bloom

THE launch of Bexhill In Bloom kicked off this year on April Fools Day at Grosvenor Park's Garden Room.

There were stands with various garden-related products as well entry forms, details of this year’s competition and events taking place throughout the year.

The committee members always try to put on something different and this year was no exception.

Greenfingered Fred from ESK Gardening Club unfortunately was unable to attend. However, in attendance was His Majesty, King Henry VIII with second wife, Ann Boleyn’s daughter Elizabeth.

Mayor Jimmy Carroll -opened the event and James Kimber, President of the Chamber of Commerce, also attended.

During the evening, a competition took place to choose the new Bexhill In Bloom Princess.

Winner was Grace Denney, eight - and Faith Marie Green, four, and and Abigail Fuller, five, were named as Little Princesses.

The evening continued with talks from various speakers including Jeremy Marris from Tree of Hope Children’s Charity and Lauren Gander, Tree of Hope’s Young Ambassador.

Michael Bernard from Bexhill Environmental Group said every school which entered the Bexhill in Bloom Youth Competition to Plant A Seaside Garden would receive a free fruit tree to plant in their school grounds. This is part of the BEG campaign to plant trees all around the town.

Cllr Paul Lendon talked about Sussex Day which is on June 16 every year, including his Sussex Day Walk which commences 11am from the Clock Tower.

Cllr Michael Ensor gave information on his Youth Club at St John’s Church Hall in Town Hall Square. This will also be the venue for the Bexhill in Bloom Awards on Monday September 19 at 5.15pm, with light refreshments. Also a surprise VIP will be present at the grand re-opening of the Bexhill Visitor info point on Saturday May 7 at 11.30am at St John’s Church Hall in Town Hall Square. The BVIP will be open Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 3pm.

The raffle and food sales from the launch raised £66.51. The food was supplied by members of the committee and Tesco champion Hazel Linden. Thanks were also given to Freedom Leisure and ESK Gardening Club who sponsor the prizes, to Sean Towey of John O’Connor’s who help keep the flower beds around the town in good order and to the Bexhill Observer for its ongoing help with publicity.
