'The river is normally five metres wide but it is at least 200 metres wide.

'If it goes on like this we have got a real problem.'

Cllr John Blake said he was 'pessimistic about the prospect of avoiding flooding' around his home in Church Path, Hellingly.

He was worried about the safety of a disabled neighbour who lives near Church Road and Church Lane.

He said: 'The flood is very evident all around us.

'Church Road is under water.

'It is raining hard and the water levels rising perceptibly.

'It is evident the situation is going to get worse.'
