Rugby women prepare for Worthing Race for Life

KEEN members of Worthing Rugby Club have signed up to take part in not one, but eight Race for Life events.

The five women, who play for the Angmering-based club, have already run the Crawley event in aid of Cancer Research UK but still have to complete the 5k races in towns including Eastbourne, Brighton and Worthing. Over the next few weeks, between them the group will clock-up 200k.

Worthing club captain, Alice Hayes from Arundel, is one of the five.

She said: “Some people reckon we’re mad to have a go at eight but we’re really up for the challenge and looking forward to it.

“Cancer Research UK is close to the hearts of many of our members. We know the work the charity does is life-saving so we couldn’t think of a better way to keep fit, build up team spirit and, hopefully, raise a lot of money, all at the same time.”

The other members taking part are Natalie Reynolds from Pulborough, Gemma Bullen from Worthing, Jules Rochford from Selsey and Zarina Shrubb who lives in Storrington.

And if that was not impressive enough, another 27 members of the club have signed up to do at least one Race for Life event each, which should help the Roundstone Lane-based club raise thousands for Cancer Research UK.

“I’m so proud of all our members,” said Alice. “We’re all very excited and it’s brilliant to have something for the team to take part in together.

“So many people are touched by cancer and this is our way of doing something positive to help support Cancer Research UK’s important work.

“We’d urge other women in the area to join us at any one or more – of the races – by either taking part themselves or sponsoring somebody who is. If we can do it, they can!”
