Runners gear up for Mid Sussex Marathon weekend

Runners are gearing up to pound pavements and fields in the fourth Mid Sussex Marathon.

The race will be split into three sections over the May Bank Holiday weekend - starting off with a 10-mile race at East Grinstead Rugby club on May 2 and a 10-mile race starting in Victoria Park in Haywards Heath on May 3.

The last 6.2 mile leg of the marathon weekend will be held in Burgess Hill on May 4 - hosted by Oakmeeds Community College.

Colin Taylor, head teacher at Oakmeeds Community College said: “As an important part of the Burgess Hill community, Oakmeeds Community College is very happy to have been able to help out with the arrangements for the Mid Sussex Marathon and Affinity Sutton Mid Sussex mile races this weekend. I hope all participants have an enjoyable and successful event.”

The race is an official UK Athletics Grand Prix event, with the lead runners expecting to complete the 10-mile distance in less than 50 minutes.

The Affinity Sutton Mid Sussex Mile races will start each day at 9.30am, with adults and children participating in a fun but competitive one-mile race.

Mark Fisher, Head of Leisure and Sustainability atMidSussex District Council said: “The Mid Sussex marathon has become a ‘not to be missed’ fixture of the Bank Holiday Weekend calendar and is being coordinated for the first time in partnership with Places for People Leisure.

“This great event couldn’t run without the fantastic support we receive from local people and organisations and we’re grateful to hosts East Grinstead Rugby Club and to Woodlands Meed School and Oakmeeds Community College for providing the start/finish for the Burgess Hill leg this year. The event always generates a great atmosphere and ensures that people of all ages are able to take part.”

A spokesman for the event said more than 1,000 competitors are expected to take part in the community-orientated event. Mid Sussex Marathon is being managed by Places for People Leisure and supported by Nice Work.
