Active Rother, the council’s partnership aimed at encouraging people to get active, is organising groups for beginners in Bexhill and Rye, from January.

The initiative is part of Getting Rother Active, a three-year project launched after the council won £120,000 funding from Sport England.

Dawn Crafer, 45, from Rye, was a member of one of the groups which ran successfully this year.

She said: “There was no way I could have even considered attempting running if the only options were to join a normal group or to go it alone.

“I have learnt so much and my fitness levels have improved enormously.” Anita Klugman, 50, from Bexhill, said: “This is a brilliant course for beginners. It builds your confidence and stamina up really quickly and combined with such a supportive teacher and group it makes every week fun and exhilarating.”

In Bexhill, 10-week courses will be held on Monday nights from 7-8pm, starting January 11, and Tuesday mornings from 9.30-10.30am starting on January 12.

Meanwhile, in Rye, an eight-week course running on Saturday mornings from 9am to 10am begins on January 9.

Cllr Jonathan Johnson, RDC cabinet member for young people, sport and leisure, said: “Signing up for these courses now is a great way for people to make a commitment to get fit in the new year, to take up a fresh sport in a supportive environment and meet new people.”

Participants in the Bexhill group, which costs £2 a session, will meet on Bexhill seafront by the sailing club, while those taking part in the Rye group, costing a one-off fee of £10, meet at Bedford Place car park. People can book for the Bexhill courses by emailing [email protected] and for Rye by emailing [email protected]
