Football-mad Hector Glyn-Jones, ten, will have the chance of a lifetime on Sunday (December 21) after he was selected from about 40,000 people to be the Gunners’ next mascot at their upcoming game at Anfield.

The year-five Georgian Gardens Primary School pupil will be walking out onto the pitch in front of thousands of fans, with his moment being broadcast live on Sky TV to an audience in the millions.

A thrilled Hector said he wasn’t nervous about the day and added: “I was really excited when I heard I was going to be the mascot.

“When I told my friends at school they didn’t believe me at first.”

The youngster has had to wait to wait almost two months for his big day in Liverpool.

Envious dad, Ben, 47 – who is also a big Arsenal fan – said: “It was jaw-dropping. I was incredibly surprised and excited for Hector when I took the call from Arsenal.

“I have been an Arsenal supporter since the age of four. So for me, at his age, to have this chance, well, it would have been the ultimate.

“To lead the team out would have been unbelievable. So to hear Hector was going to be doing it, I was in disbelief.”

The call came two days before Hector’s tenth birthday, with Ben and his wife, Deborah, deciding to keep the news a closely-guarded secret until the big day.

“When we told him, he was just stunned, absolutely stunned,” added Ben. “He put his hands in the air and had a massive smile on his face.

“It was funny, his younger brother, Walter, actually asked if he could have that for his birthday, too.”

Hector added: “It was the best birthday present ever.”

The match is scheduled for a 4pm kick-off.
