Guy Burridge, 54, formerly of The Street, has faced days without power or television which has isolated much of his community.

Mr Burridge, who returned to the country only a few weeks ago after a summer break in the UK, has lived in Puerto Galera, on the northern tip of the island of Mindoro, for about 10 years.

Fortunately, he was not severely affected by last week’s typhoon but he is urging people to do all they can to support the relief efforts.

He said: “After the storm went past on the Saturday there was thunder, rain and lightening like you have never seen. I think this highlights how big this thing was, as this was rain from the outer part of the system, even though it had passed into South China sea by then.”

He said people are trying to maintain their daily routine but it has been tough for many locals.

“There are efforts locally to help but this is a poor country so many locals aren’t able to do much on that front, it’s more aimed at the tourists.”

He is urging people to donate any clothes and tinned foods.
