Rustington mum tells of anger after cycle collision

THE MOTHER of a young Rustington rugby player whose knee was fractured after a passing cyclist knocked him off his bike has spoken of her outrage.

Morgan Day, 11, was cycling near the A259, next to Sainsbury’s, Rustington, on his way to school, on Wednesday (November 30) morning, when he was knocked down by another passing cyclist.

The cyclist, believed to be in his 30s, did not even stop to check on the youngster after he was flung to the floor.

Morgan’s mother, Mia Day, said: “I’m just so angry.

“The man is an absolute disgrace.

“Morgan tried to go towards the edge of the path, but this man just knocked into him.

“Morgan went flying off his bike, over the handle bars, hitting the floor head-first.

“He was shaking like a leaf when I picked him up. I took one look at him and said, ‘A&E, right now’.”

An examination at Worthing Hospital discovered the 11-year-old’s knee cap had been chipped by the crash.

He will have his leg in a splint for the next four weeks, while his knee recovers, and this has put a dampener on The Angmering School student’s rugby prospects, with Worthing RFC under-12’s side, for this season.

“He has been working so hard to get into the A team,” said Mia.

“This is a real set-back for him.

“He was just mortified. The man should be ashamed of himself.

“If I’d have knocked a child down I would have gone straight back.”

Morgan, who plays regularly as either the scrum half or full-back for the under-12’s second team, has now been side-lined after the knockdown.

Morgan, who last season won the player’s shield at the club, said: “It’s difficult. I wanted to get high in the team, but now I can’t play. It’s pretty annoying.”

Mia added that she would like the cyclist to apologise. She said: “I know he didn’t do it on purpose, but I think the least he could do would be to say sorry for what he did. I can’t believe he wouldn’t have known Morgan had fallen down.”
