Rustington mum thanks the blood runners

GRATEFUL mum Amy Simmons went more than the extra mile to support the charity that helped her in her hour of need.

She walked 25 miles in a day to raise more than £1,000 for SERV, an organisation which makes emergency blood deliveries with the help of volunteer motor cyclists.

Amy, 28, of Jubilee Avenue, Rustington, said: “It’s a charity close to my heart. I needed a lot of blood when I had serious complications during the birth of my baby last year, and so wanted to do something to help the people who helped me.”

Thankfully, baby Madeleine, who will be one next Friday, and her mum are now healthy – just as well, given the distance Amy covered from Goodwood racecourse, over the Downs to Bignor Hill, and back.

“I did it on my own and it was quite tough, but wanting to help SERV kept me going. It’s a wonderful service,” said Amy, who also has a son, George, aged two. She works part-time in customer services for Southern Water and her husband, Paul, is a railway engineer.

A volunteer rider with SERV, from Worthing, collected the blood Amy needed in the middle of the night, and delivered it to Worthing Hospital, where she was giving birth. “I haven’t met him, but I have spoken to him on the phone to thank him for what he did,” said Amy.
