Rustington photographer’s award-winning seascape

A RUSTINGTON man proved he was among the country’s best amateur maritime photographers by coming second in a national competition.

Steve Nightingale, 50, of Copper Hall Close, proved his artistic flair by taking this colour picture of the Sandsend breakwaters, in Yorkshire.

Artistic Steve pipped roughly 3,000 other entrants, from across the country, in this year’s Wish You Were Here photography competition, which was organised by Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

Steve, who was pleased with his photo, said: “To come in the top 10 means a lot to me and I’m over the moon to have been placed second.

“The photo was taken on a beautiful late evening in spring, 2009 in Sandsend, North Yorkshire. I captured the image on an already ageing Kodak Z740 bridge five mega-pixel camera, which I believe shows you don’t need a top of the range camera to get placed in competitions.

“Ironically, this shot was taken as part of an exercise to get some black and white photos but I decided to leave this one in colour, which I’m delighted I did now.”

Steve was awarded a 12-year-old bottle of Old Pulteney whisky.

Organisers of the competition, now in its sixth year, said it had attraced a high calibre of photographic talent.

Margaret Mary Clarke, of Old Pulteney, said: “Every year more and more photographs at an incredibly high standard are entered. Steve’s photograph, ‘Sandsend’, really impressed the judges and we loved the composition, colours and lighting in it. Congratulations to Steve.”

Steve now hopes to go one better and win next year’s competition.
