Rustington Players stage Pygmalion

COCKNEY flower girl Eliza Doolittle pleads with the passing crowds to buy her posies. . . and Rustington Players have high hopes that their production of Pygmalion will appeal to audiences next week, too.

The company will be sticking closely to George Bernard Shaw’s original approach to the story of Professor Higgins’ attempt to transform humble Eliza to a Duchess, rather than the more romanticised version in the musical My Fair Lady.

“It is an exceptional play and we hope our readers will enjoy it,” says Val Daly, the director.

The male chauvinist professor (Nick Rowling) has a wager with his new friend Col Pickering (Nigel Peacock) that he can work wonders with Eliza (Cat McLelland), and she will be at ease in polite society.

But Eliza has a mind of her own and the metamorphosis is far from straightforward.

The 13-strong cast includes Players’ stalwarts and some newcomers.

Performances are at the Woodland Centre, Woodlands Avenue, Rustington, from Wednesday to Saturday (March 13-16) at 7.45pm.

Tickets, price £9 (£5 children) are available from the box office, telephone 01903 774849, or on the door.
