Rustington’s Sainsbury’s celebrates opening of temporary store

IT WAS a case of out with the old and in with the new as Sainsbury’s in Rustington opened the doors to its new home – in a manner of speaking.

The company unveiled its temporary store to customers last Wednesday (February 6), at the former Focus DIY, at the New Road Retail Park. Demolition of the old supermarket, 200 yards away across the car park, is set to begin soon.

The temporary site, although slightly smaller, still features all the same products and grocery goods as its predecessor.

Manager Rafe Overy, said the company’s plans had received a positive reaction from many customers.

“Everyone is looking forward to the new and improved store and people appreciate that we are able to maintain Sainsbury’s offer here in Rustington.

“Most of our existing staff are working in the temporary store and the remaining colleagues are now working at other nearby branches until the new and improved store opens this autumn.”

Work on the new superstore will begin in earnest later this year.

It will feature increased parking facilities and more store space, as well as creating around 100 new jobs.

Daren Carpenter, Sainsbury’s project manager, said “Once complete, it will provide our customers with greater choice and a better shopping environment.

“The new store will be more environmentally friendly and incorporates a number of sustainable features to reduce the building’s energy demands. We anticipate that the new store will open this autumn and will create approximately 100 new full and part time positions.”
