Rye area Remembers

A moving ceremony saw people paying their respect to those who served their country and made the ultimate sacrifice.

Old soldiers were joined by members of local youth organisations as standards were displayed in a procession past the Town Hall, which paused to take the salute of Rye Mayor Cllr Bernardine Fiddimore.

A service at St Mary’s Church was followed by wreath laying at the War memorial in the churchyard.

Amber said: “Remembrance Sunday gives us a chance to commemorate the achievements of our British soldiers and to recognise those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our country.

“This year’s commemorations are particularly moving because they mark the 100th anniversary since the First World War began. We must never forget the courage and dedication our service men and women gave for our freedom today.

“I am proud that hundreds of members of our local community came out to remember our fallen soldiers.”

Pupils and staff at Guestling Bradshaw School observed the two minutes silence on Tuesday at 11am.

The whole school including office staff, catering and kitchen staff and teachers gathered in the hall to share in a service of Remembrance led by Meriel Deasey.

Meriel shared photos of her family members who had served in WW1 and she also brought the Roll of Honour and Muster Roll from Pett Church. This contains the names of some families who are still in the school including Cooke, Glazier and Cox.

Kate Tugwell, from the school, said: “This tangible link with the past made the war seem more personal to the pupils in the school.”
