Rye Battle of Britain fly-past

A REMINDER of when the Battle of Britain raged in the skies over Rye and Romney Marsh takes place on Saturday June 2 when three historic war-planes fly over Rye to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight plans a full display by a Lancaster, Hurricane and Spitfire during the afternoon.

A BBMF spokesperson said: “Since our formation in July 1957, we have completed thousands of displays and tens of thousands of fly-pasts; proud to represent the nation’s aviation heritage.

“We are a large Flight within the Royal Air Force and we are extremely proud of not only our history, but our continued engagement in operations abroad. The Royal Air Force continues to police the skies above our country, much like the fighters of the Flight did some 70 years ago. We are a “museum without walls” and a “living and breathing tribute” to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

“Some of the personnel have recently returned from Afghanistan and Iraq and some will be temporarily detached on operations overseas during their time with the Flight. The team are delighted to be displaying in Rye.”

The display will be at approx 4.30pm and one of the best viewing points in town will be at Strand Quay.
