Rye Community hub uncertaintyuncertainty

RYE’s Tilling Green Community Centre is worried about its future.

The much needed community centre has proved a huge success since setting up in the former Tilling Green School building.

But East Sussex County Council says the ageing building is proving too costly to run and is exploring other options.

Tilling Green Residents Association chairman Daliea Redman said: “We still don’t know what is going to happen. This is very much on everyone’s mind.”

Rye county councillor Keith Glazier assured her the community centre would be safe and said: “The need for this important facility has been clearly proved.

“There is provision for Rye Partnership to roll over the lease but first there has to be a formal consultation on the disposal of the playing fields before anything else can happen. I anticipate that will take at least a year.

“I have said before clearly that before any knocking down of existing premises takes place we want to see a new centre built.

“The cost of running an old building like the school is astronomical in the winter and clearly not sustainable.

“The design of any new building will be based on what is affordable and what is needed.

“I think we will see an extension to the lease.”

The Tilling Green Centre has been used to hold exercise and computer classes and has been the venue for a number of public meetings.

It has also ben used for local art exhibitions.

At Easter it was the venue for a well attended Family Fun Day.
