Rye Council totackle big freeze

With a hard winter forecast Rye Town Council will once again be taking a proactive approach to tackling any ice and snow.

And they are appealing for willing volunteers to help them keep Rye running if the big freeze hits.

The last time Rye was hit by snow councillors turned out in force to keep routes clear in places such as the Citadel and Tilling Green.

Rye councillor Granville Bantick said: “Long range weather forecasters are predicting one of the coldest winters on record.

“It is thought that this should not cause East Sussex County Council too many problems as the Highways team has taken delivery of eighteen new gritter 4 X 4 vehicles.

“It is reported by Roger Williams, head of Highways at ESCC, that they are bigger, and can hold even more salt.

“He says they are more prepared for winter, and will be more efficient, and be able to stay out on the roads longer if required.

“On a more local level Rye Town Council’s “Adverse Weather Action Group” has some councillors standing by to do a bit of snow clearance if required.

“It is hoped this small group will encourage others to help out, particularly where it is known there are areas vulnerable to elderly people and those having mobility problems.

“The Town Clerk would like to hear of any able bodied person willing to volunteer.”

There are already signs of winter weather setting in with temperatures in some parts of the country expected to drop to freezing this week and snow predicted by the weekend for some areas.
