Rye gardento uncoverit’s secretson Sunday

THERE will be a chance to view one of the most unusual gardens in Rye on Sunday when Rye Conservation Society holds its annual garden party at Orchard House.

The event takes place from 2pm - 5pm at the West Street property.

Little Orchard House has a surprisingly large and lovely garden in the heart of Rye’s citadel and also harbours the so-called ‘Smugglers Tower’, a four-storey building constructed in 1768 by the Proctor family - prosperous merchants who made a lot of money possibly through less than legal means and hence the tower’s name.

Entrance to the event is payable on the door and costs £4 for the Society’s members and £5 for non-members (with reductions for children).

However, the entry fee also includes a delicious cream tea created by Rae Festing.

Rye Conservation Society chairman John Griffiths, said: “Do come along for a chat, a chance look around this lovely private garden with its amazing tower and tea by Rae.

“Everyone will be warmly welcomed.”
