Rye leads the way with yarnbombing craze

The latest were on display at the Strand area recently to celebrate International Yarnbombing Day.

Bollards were covered, trees were decorated, knitted bunting was put up, and a colourful net complete with fish, octopus and mermaid appeared on the huge anchor outside Rye Heritage Centre.

Wendy Harvey explained: “Rye is keeping up to date with the worldwide craze for yarnbombing, and other towns along the south coast have followed our lead. “A group in Brighton were so inspired by our earlier yarnbombing that they got busy during the recent Brighton Festival.

“People ask us why we do it - we have fun doing it, we learn new skills, it is a chance to experiment, a chance to use up our stashes of yarn, make new friends, and entertain both locals and tourists. We have only got to watch peoples’ faces light up and smile when they see our handiwork to know that all the fun that we have already had is worthwhile.”
