A Mazda 6 car and a Kawazaki motorbike crashed on Monks Walk at around midday.

The 21-year-old man, who was riding the motorcycle, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to St George’s Hospital, Tooting, where he is in a critical but stable condition.

His pillion passenger, a woman aged 21 from Hastings, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, with serious leg injuries.

The car driver, a 79-year-old Hastings man, was uninjured.

Guy Fraser-Sampson, 58, of German Street, Winchelsea, believes this was ‘an accident waiting to happen’ and average speed cameras should be installed to stop bikers driving too fast.

“Motor cycles routinely use Monk’s Walk as part of a racetrack. I have had bikers go past me at about seventy miles an hour down that road.

“Unless and until the police choose to do something about it, the situation will continue, and sooner or later someone will be killed – perhaps one of the young children or elderly people who live along that stretch.

“Two average speed cameras, one at each end of the road, dispensing automatic penalty notices as routinely happens in London, would seem an obvious solution, as well as generating a great deal of revenue for the council.”

Sergeant Sarah Porter said: “We are appealing for anyone who either saw the collision or believe they saw either of the vehicles being driven before the collision to contact us.”
