Rye precept set to rise by more than £13K

Taxes are set to increase as Rye council looks likely to push its precept up by more than £13,000 to £122,100 for 2016/17.

Rye Town Council is due to discuss the precept at the first meeting of the new year on Monday (February 1).

The council’s accountants expect to spend £28,839 over their budget this year, with a total of £183,748 and a shortfall of £39,534.

This is mainly due to the unexpected £21,000 spent on repairing the council’s cottage, which had £0 budgeted for it for this fiscal year.

Last year’s precept of £108,767 was still not enough to break even as the council expects to bring in £10,685 less than predicted in income, with a total of £144,214, despite budgeting for £154,909.

The forecast income for 2016/17 is £163,882 with the only major increase coming from the precept.

This means the budget gets tighter and one victim of this seems to be the Rye Christmas Festival as it looks to be getting £1,500 less from the local authority than last year.

The grants fund also looks to have shrunk by £750.

The precept is a tax charged on every household in Rye and funds the town council’s budget.

It is calculated by all the various committees putting forward their budgets which collectively makes the town council’s budget, this then informs what amount it needs to function.

The precept is then added to the total council tax bill, collected by Rother District Council.

The 1.1 per cent increase means the precept will raise £122,100 for the town council in 2016/17.

The precept is used to fund town council services, including the allotments, the cemetery and street lighting.
