Rye rail station could become art showcase

LOCAL artists could soon find their work on display at Rye rail station following a joint venture between the station and the School Creative Centre.

The scheme has been launched as part of Southern Railway’s Station Partnership scheme and provides opportunities for members of the local community to become more actively involved with their local station.

Sam Bryant from Sussex Community Rail Partnership says: “The scheme runs across the network and allows community groups or organisations to develop the station into a local focal point by providing interesting ‘extras’ that the railway company cannot. Local artwork has proved especially popular with other station partnership groups, as has gardening. We know how successful these collaborations can be but have found it hard to find a local group that would be able to work with Rye Station long term. That was until the School Creative Centre came along.”

Station Group Manager, Graham Thrower says: “The station is about to embark on an exciting future working in partnership with the School Creative Centre and it is great to have such a dynamic organisation on board.”

The School Creative Centre has already started work with a small display of artwork by two of their resident artists: Jillian Eldgridge and Anny Evason, to be followed by a showcase of work from local charity ARRCC who are also resident at the School Creative Centre.

Christine Harmar-Brown, outreach and education co-ordinator at The School Creative Centre says: “We think this is a fantastic initiative and we are very pleased to have been asked to take part. We have lots of ideas about how to enhance our local station and look forward to implementing them in 2013.”
