Rye Society of Artists donate much needed art funds to Rye College

RYE Society of Artists has donated £500 to the art department ahead of their 61st annual exhibition opening this weekend.

The Society has also instigated a series of ongoing art prizes for students at the college. The inaugural prizes were won by final-year students Harry Allum, Kate Bruce and Emily Dickinson.

We were incredibly impressed with the quality of their work,” Society chairman Peter Greenhalf said. “It was very hard to choose the winners, as much of the work was of such a high standard. It’s very good to know that there is such an excellent crop of talented young artists developing in Rye.”

The Society’s annual summer show in the Boy’s Club, Mermaid Street, will see lots of fresh new wall art and new 3D pieces.

“We have invited nine new artists to take part in the exhibition along with all of the work selected by open submission,” Peter Greenhalf went on. “This summer’s show should be very exciting, with new oils, mixed media and ceramics. We have some dramatic boat sculptures by Stuart Chester, evocative downland watercolours from Cliff Howe, local scenes in oils, by Karl Terry, along with much more.”

The exhibition will be held in the Boys Club (half way up Mermaid Street) and will be open to the public from Saturday 4th to Friday 31st August, from 10.30 am to 5.30 pm including Sundays.

RSA Member Celia Allen arranges 3D work.
