Safari van thrill for playgroup

A disused camper van has been converted into a safari-style playhouse for a charity-funded nursery in Angmering.

Arundel and District Rotary Club and Insight Rotaract Littlehampton have worked together over the last four months to create a fun place for the children of William Older Playgroup.

Members of the two clubs worked on the Daihatsu Hijet over the school holidays, weekends and a number of long evenings, after normal working hours.

The design was based on a traditional camper van fit ­out, with an African twist.

Sue Droy, playgroup manager, originally approached one of the Rotarians with a request to donate an old camper van to enhance the outside play area.

Fiona Rose, Arundel and District Rotary Club press officer, said: “It was suggested the van could be converted into something more fun and imaginative, and both the Rotary and Rotaract clubs agreed it would be a fantastic joint project to take on, utilising their creative energy and enthusiasm.

“The exterior was washed, sanded down and hand painted. The multi­-coloured vehicle came to life when the zebra stripes were carefully painted on and the bumpers and wheels were spray­-painted white.

“The interior fit out includes a play kitchen, table and benches with storage underneath, wood-effect flooring and animal silhouettes on the windows, which were very kindly donated by local company It’s A Wrap.

“The interior panels and chairs were re­covered in lime green along with matching curtains to create a light and fun space for the children to enjoy.”

Both the Rotary and Rotaract clubs are always looking to take on projects for the community and with the community.
