Safety fears after shots fired at youth centre windows

Youngsters using Lewes’ Landport Youth Centre and their families were horrified to see what appeared to be bullet holes in the windows.

Centre treasurer, Cllr Roger Murray said: “All was fine last Thursday. When I arrived at about 4pm Friday I found glass all over the floor. There were four small, circular holes punched in a window in a nine inch square. There were also exit points opposite.

“The windows are about five metres up. It looked to me as if they had been made by bullets from, possibly, a .22 rifle.”

He found another window similarly damaged on the opposite wall, where nine windows were broken overall. Glaziers have now replaced them at a cost of £1,800. He said the windows cannot be seen clearly from the public car park and believes the shots must have been fired from Landport Road or Lee Road. He called police and a PCS0 visited but did not agree that the holes had been caused by shots.

But Cllr Murray said: “My knowledge of physics is limited but no other type of missile could punch a hole that shape and size and at that height.”

Now there are fears for users’ safety. The Centre hosts youth clubs and football games, martial arts classes, parent toddler sessions and the YMCA.

He went on: “I think some idiot got hold of a gun, maybe an air rifle. A friend said he heard something like shots that night but thought they were coming from another direction. He now wishes he’d called police.”
