Safety plea fails

A HEATHFIELD man who was hit on the arm by a passing car has been told by East Sussex County Council that the road in question does not qualify for road calming measures.

Brian Hamper, of Tilsmore Road, last week received a letter from the county telling him that there had been 'no reported injury accidents' on the road which has no pavements in the past three years.

The Sussex Express last month reported how Mr Hamper had called for the county council to act to reduce traffic through the road after he was struck by the wing mirror of a passing car.

The letter from the county's transport department, said Tilsmore Road did not meet the qualifying criteria needed before a site could be considered for safety measures.

Mr Hamper said: 'How serious would it have to be before they act? I've been hit on the arm, and I've seen cars hitting people's umbrellas as they go past. And people are being forced to dive into hedges to avoid vehicles all the time.'

'It's only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt or even killed on this road.'
