ROAD safety work is planned for a notorious Newhaven accident blackspot.

The Highways Agency has revealed it is preparing a safety scheme for the A26 between Beddingham and Newhaven. From August 1997 to July 2000, there were 39 accidents on the road.

New hazard warning signs and improved road markings are planned for the sharp turns known as the Beddingham bends, near Lay Cottage; the junction of the A26 with Avis Road and the stretch of road to the Three Ponds holiday home park.

It is hoped most improvements will be in place within six months.

Newhaven s MP Norman Baker welcomed the announcement. He said: This road has a worrying number of accidents so I am glad some action is being taken. However, I would be happier if accident blackspots, such as sharp bends, could be eliminated, rather than simply better signposted.
