Sailing Club back inaction following theDecember flood

A HUGE effort by members has seen Rye Harbour Sailing Club recover from December’s flood which almost saw their club house washed away.

Club Commodore Charles Bronsdon said: “We have experienced high tides before and tides of 4m to 4.3m are not unusual, this however was the one in a lifetime. The Harbour office measured it at 5.3m.

We thought we may be flooded to about 6 inches, but in reality it turned out to be closer on 24 inches, which caused extensive damage to all the electrical fittings as well as to the building itself. The boats in the dinghy park all finished up in one corner even though they had been tied down; luckily little damage had been done to them.

It left a deep layer of nasty smelling river mud. But thanks to club members who descended with mops and buckets that was soon removed, and with the help of some very powerful heaters we started to slowly dry out the building. With the help of club members and very helpful contractors we managed to complete most of the work by the end of February.

“We managed to have a number of social events in the William the Conquer pub in Rye Harbour who kindly allowed us the use the pub and kitchens.”
