Sainbury's submits plans for Bognor site

A £50m planning application for a new Sainsbury's and commercial premises in Bognor Regis is being officially submitted tomorrow (Friday, December 12).

The retailer and Sime Darby London, the owner of the former Lec Refrigeration site, will combine to hand in the formal paperwork to Arun District Council.

This sets out the detailed case for a Sainsbury's store with 55,000sq ft of selling space, more than 400 full and part-time jobs, a new petrol station and jet car wash and some 600 parking spaces on some eight acres of the former fridge factory site alongside the A29 Shripney Road.

Also included in the development proposals will be an outline scheme by Sime Darby for commercial uses on the remaining 2.45 acres to generate even more jobs on the land.

It is expected the total redevelopment of the eyesore location, if it is approved by Arun District Council, will generate an investment of some 50m.

Sime Darby London managing director Raof Daud said: "If planning permission is granted, work could start on this site as early as next year. This would signal a tangible sign of investment in the town."
