Sainsbury's all wrapped up

Sainsbury's has delivered a £50m Christmas present for Bognor Regis.

The retailer joined with landowner Sime Darby London Ltd to hand in its application for a new store on the former Lec Refrigeration land.

The formal and detailed paperwork was adorned with wrapping paper and bows to signify the festive season.

The several hundred pages show why Sainsbury's and Sime Darby think the former industrial site along Shripney Road is ideally suited for a new store.

Also included in the package handed to Arun District Council's planning department was an outline application for high quality employment use on the rest of the site.

Max Whitehand, the regional development executive at Sainsbury's, commented that his firm's proposals '“ rather than Asda's '“ deserved to be successful in providing increased choice for Bognor's shoppers.

"We strongly believe Sainsbury's represents the best option and would be in accordance with the agreed development brief for this derelict and brownfield site. The proposals would deliver significant regeneration benefits, including in particular decontamination of this site, which could not otherwise be afforded," he said.

The overall improvements to the land would represent some 50m of investment and provide more than 400 full- and part-time jobs.

Sime Darby London director Raof Daud said work on the land could start next year if approval was given by councillors.

"The proposals have strong support from the local community and will be an important milestone in bringing forward wider regeneration and investor confidence in Bognor," he stated.
