Sainsbury’s submits plans

SUPERMARKET giant Sainsbury’s has entered the fray submitting plans for a new store on land they own off Ferry Road.

Sainsbury’s purchased the Lower School site in June 2010 and say they have overwhelming positive feedback on initial proposals.

Now detailed plans have been submitted to Rother District Council.

The new Sainsbury’s supermarket would have a sales area of 18,590sqft and 163 car parking spaces.

Sainsbury’s say it would help retain shoppers in Rye and District which would have a positive influence on the wider local economy and help to save unnecessary car journeys to stores outside the area. It would also create up to 150 job opportunities for local people and regenerate a key brown field site which has been derelict for many years.

Tesco has submitted a planning application for a new supermarket on the Lower School site. Whilst Tesco can submit an application on land not in their ownership, they may not be able to build on the site as the majority of the site is in Sainsbury’s ownership.

Max Whitehand, Sainsbury’s Regional Development Executive, said: “Since purchasing the Lower School site in June we have been working hard to evolve a planning application for a new Sainsbury’s store which makes a positive contribution to Rye and, importantly, is implemental.

“We are therefore very excited to be submitting this application which follows the overwhelming support we received for a new Sainsbury’s store during our public consultation.”
