FORMER Olympic athlete and gold medallist Sally Gunnell visited Petworth Community Gardens to see for herself how Sport Relief funding is helping the project grow.

Sally met members of the team in the wheelchair accessible garden and was presented with daffodils and a basket of vegetables by two year old Liam.

The garden was set up by Kate Brickell who was inspired after gardening helped her recover from ME. It left her fatigued, with painful joints and muscles and took her ten slow and frustrating years to recover. But, she said gardening became her salvation.

She set up the Petworth Community Garden to help disadvantaged people and she and her volunteer team have supported hundreds of people. From improving confidence and encouraging independence, to increasing the strength of people with physical difficulties, the project is making a difference to the most vulnerable people in the community.

They are taught to grow, care for and harvest healthy food, and take away a bag of fresh fruit and vegetables. Members also enjoy a lunch made from seasonal produce, and experience the health and social benefits of working in a regular mixed community group.
