Sally, former Olympic 400m hurdles champion and BBC television presenter, is a long-standing patron of the Poling-based charity.

She is calling on runners from across the county to enter next month’s Coastal 10k run to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the children’s hospice.

This will be the organisation’s 10th charity 10k and will be raising much-needed cash to support life-limited children and their families.

Speaking of the event, Sally said: “This fast, flat route is great for seasoned and first-time runners alike. This year, runners and their supporters will be able to enjoy musical entertainment and get involved in the party atmosphere.

“I would like to encourage everyone to lace up their trainers and sign-up to run for Chestnut Tree House in this special year.

“I have seen for myself the fantastic work the hospice does for life-limited children and their families across East and West Sussex and with just eight per cent of the £3m running cost coming from central Government, the hospice needs all the support it can get from you, its local community.”

The race is on Sunday, September 15, starting at the Littlehampton Promenade, at 9.30am.

The course follows a scenic, circular route, travelling past Harbour Park, along the River Arun, turning east along South Terrace, up through Sea Road before taking a winding route through Rustington and turning back, passing through Mewsbrook Park before reaching the finishing line at Harbour Park.

Sally isn’t expected to take part in this year’s event.

However, a spokeswoman from the hospice said that around 400 people have already signed up.

“It’s still early days but this is a good number to have, so far,” she said.

Last year, almost 1,000 people tackled the course and raised an impressive £47,000 for the hospice.

However, it is hoped September’s run will beat this, with organisers anticipating 1,200 runners taking on the challenge.

Many will be racing for their own reasons. Some do it for charity or in memory of loved ones while others do it to test their stamina.

Registration costs just £12 in advance and £15 on the day and includes a Runner Pack – disposable chip, runner number, hints and tips, sponsor form and route map.

Those who complete the course will receive a goody bag and a medal. Runners must be aged 16 or over.

Sally added the 10k was a ‘fantastic event’ and a great way to support the hospice.
