22 year old Samantha Smith will be running for Pancreatic Cancer Action in their running vest, hoping to raise awareness of the disease as she sadly lost her Dad to it early last year.

Samantha’s dad, Keith, started experiencing pains in his stomach and noticed swelling which got increasingly worse until they had to call an ambulance. He was misdiagnosed with a locked bowel and told to go home. However, his wife refused and he was sent for more tests. It was on February 29 that he was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. Keith got a bed in St Barnabas where he sadly passed away with his wife by his side on March 26. Since then, Samantha has been fundraising for the hospice so that someone else can get the chance of a bed there.

She said: “I refuse to let anyone else have such little time between diagnosis and dealing with it, because if doctors hadn’t thought it was a locked bowl or a problem with his diabetes then I believe he could have had treatment. That’s why I am running, to make people aware and support a charity that raises awareness to everyone. I hope I raise enough.”

Pancreatic Cancer Action is committed to working towards earlier diagnosis of the disease so that surgery, currently the only cure, is made available to the sufferer.
