Santa arrrives in style to light up town

A big crowd turned out to see Santa arrive in style in Battle at the weekend as the town launched its Christmas celebrations.

The fun got underway on Friday November 25 when a group of cheeky be-hatted elves gathering at Market Square, ahead of the regular ELF (Every Last Friday) live music event, taking place at various venues around the town.

Saturday proved to be a treat for families and children as Santa’s colourful parade made its way down the High Street before the jolly old gent took up residence in his magical grotto in the Battle Memorial Hall.

There was plenty of children’s entertainment in the hall while Saxonwood WI ladies served up tea and cakes.

Shortly after 5pm, everyone gathered outside for the ceremonial switching on of the town’s Christmas lights.

The events were organised by the Battle Chamber of Commerce and coincided with the popular Christmas Tree Festival returning to St Mary’s Church that weekend.

The festival featured a charity concert on the Saturday night, organised by Claverham Community College student Alice Osborne Brown. with local students performing.

The concert raised funds for St Michael’s Hospice and the Barnabas Fund, which supports Christian refugees from Syria and Iraq.
