Sat nav paves the way for Bognor cyclist

Long-distance cyclist John Peet used a sat nav to guide him to his Bognor Regis destination.

Mr Peet has adapted one of the hi-tech vehicle travelling guides to fit the handlebars of his 24-gear cycle.

It has proved invaluable in pointing the way along his journey of some 1,500 miles visiting L'Arche communities around Britain.

He said: "After a long day on the road, it has been fantastic to have the sat nav guiding me exactly to where I'm staying without me having to worry about where I'm going."

Mr Peet (58) was escorted into Bognor last Thursdayby three members of the town's L'Arche community. They joined him at South Harting for the final 20 miles of his ride from Winchester.

That section of the journey saw Mr Peet complete his 1,400th mile just before he reached the L'Arche houses in Hawthorn Road for his first visit to the properties for 18 years when he was involved in a building project in his capacity of L'Arche's general secretary.

His latest stay included a barbecue in keeping with L'Arche's tradition of meal gatherings. "L'Arche is primarily a community people regardless of whether they are disabled who are committed to living together in a mutual relationship," he explained.

He set off for Glynde in East Sussex with another escort last Saturday.

His final destination will be Canterbury on July 15. He hopes to have raised 30,000 for L'Arche. More than 11,500 has been donated so far.

Mr Peet set out from his home town of Silsdon in West Yorkshire on June 1 and averages some 50 miles a day on his Ridgeback Voyage drop handlebar bike.

He said the best section of his journey had been around Iona on a beautiful day, with the worst being the wet and windy Oban to Loch Lomond stretch.

The money he is raising will go to L'Arche in Zimbabwe where funds are desperately needed to keep the community and new communities in Glasgow and Manchester.
