Save our clams: Shellfish worth £1,000s being taken from Littlehampton and Rustington beaches

SHELLFISH worth thousands of pounds is being cleared off beaches at Rustington and Littlehampton every week.

Worried residents have complained that gangs are stripping the seashore of clams and other shellfish, and now a fisheries authority is investigating.

Eyewitnesses have told the Gazette that groups of four or five men are working up to six hours a day, even using head torches to see in the dark.

They fill several sacks at a time, each potentially worth up to 200, but if the shellfish is sold for human consumption, the gangs will be breaking the law as the beaches have not been certified for this standard.
