Mr Waterson said: "The whole day was brilliant and exceeded even my wildest expectations. Five thousand local people turned out to show their support for retaining core services at our DGH.

"It was my proudest day as the local MP."

"I was especially pleased that this was a truly cross-party and cross-community effort, involving a wealth of local churches and other organisations."

"Our next step in the campaign is meeting Tony Blair on October 11.

"He will no doubt receive reports of the March, and will be aware of the strength of feeling locally."
