Scarecrows back in Battle for the town’s fifth annual festival

THE fifth Battle Scarecrow Festival will kick off on Monday (July 1).

Following last year’s Olympic-themed straw-stuffed antics, this year the organisers have picked a Comic Characters theme for the event.

For the next three weeks, schools, community groups and local businesses will see their creations brighten up the streets and shop windows in and around Battle High Street.

Prizes are up for grabs for the most creative and imaginative scarecrows.

These will be presented at the annual Battle In Bloom Awards ceremony, which this year will take place on August 1.

The entry fee is £5 per scarecrow, or for a small group of scarecrows displaying the same title.

This year’s chosen charity is Autism Sussex, which is based in Battle.

The money raised will help provide the charity with an electronic whiteboard, to be used in the meeting room of the charity’s building in Tills Courtyard, Battle.

The judging team will be out to inspect the scarecrows shortly.

The Battle Scarecrow Festival 2013 will run until July 20.
