Charity Fundraiser for Cancer Research UK: On Monday 13 February the Esso Service Station in Scaynes Hill will be raising money for Cancer Research. Donate money and get a free car wash and a Mid Sussex Times Newspaper enter a Hamper Raffle. This event is always well supported so don’t forget to do your bit!

Get Connected!: Computer/Tablet/Mobile Help at Ardingly College

Free one to one help provided by students at Ardingly College. You don’t need to have your own equipment because these will be available but if you do have your own Mobile, Tablet or Laptop then please bring it along. You can get help accessing the internet, shopping on line, sending emails, keeping in touch with friends and family via Skype, Facebook, whatsapp and much more. Sessions run on Mondays 4.30pm – 5.30pm from Monday 9 January 2017 – 13 February 2017 inclusive; Monday 27 February to 27 March 2017 inclusive. There is then a short break for Easter but sessions will be starting again from Monday 24 April 2017.

Park your car where you can and look out for the students who will guide you to the room where the sessions are taking place. For more information call 01444 242760 or email [email protected].

If you can’t make it on a Monday, IT drop in sessions also run every Thursday morning in the Spire cafe at St John’s Church Burgess Hill 11.00am – 1.00pm.There is no need to book to attend either of these free IT drop in sessions.

Heat for Health: Your help to share this information with as many people living in Mid Sussex as possible, especially those aged 65+ and families with children under five, is much appreciated. Subject to eligibility, Heat for Health can refer people into the West Sussex County Council emergency heater scheme, and it can support individuals to apply for grants to replace their boilers, or to insulate their homes. For those aged 65+ or a family living with children under five, on a low income with little or no savings, individuals not eligible for anything else can apply for a Heat for Health grant. But do please hurry. The Heat for health initiative in its current form comes to an end on 31 March 2017. Household and Garden Waste Collection: There will be a collection on Sunday 12 February at 10.00am until 12.00 noon. The waste truck will be at the North end of the Common.

Family Support Work: The total amount of money raised from the Advent Jars was £150.67 Many thanks to everyone who supported FSW in this way. The annual FSW Spring Supper will be held on Friday 17th March at Wivelsfield Village Hall. This is St Patrick’s Day, so Irish Stew will be on the menu. Tickets, which include the meal and entertainment, cost £13.50 and will be available nearer the time. Please ask at St Augustine’s Churcfor further information.

The Year of the Bible and Deanery Day: Leaflets giving information about this Diocesan initiative are available at the back of the church. A Deanery Day on the theme of the Bible will be held on Saturday 11th February at the Church of the Ascension in Vale Road, Haywards Heath. The day will be led by Bishop Richard Jackson. It starts at 10.00 am for 10.30am and ends at 3.00 pm. The Deanery days have been very inspiring in the past, so do consider going.

The Sloop: There were 32 customers for Burn’s Night. Firstly thanks go to Louise Hawes who, in all of her Scottish glory, addressed the Haggis and produced lots of Scottish flags and tartan. Nick Hawes is next to thank for his wonderfully presented ‘Immortal Memory’ poem which he wrote himself in the style of a Burn’s poem and was all about the year of 2016. Lastly, thanks go to Mike Lavelle who piped in the Haggis to Scotland the Brave and Callum Murray who said the Selkirk Grace. The chefs made their own Haggis which was notably quoted by Nick Hawes (a man who has eaten a lot of Haggis in his life) as being the best Haggis that he’d ever eaten. Quiz Night at The Sloop: Quiz every Tuesday Night, starting at 8.00pm. Maximum of six players per team and entrance fee of £2.00 per person. This is a great quiz and is lots of fun.

W.I.: The next guest speaker will be on Wednesday 15 February at 2.00pm

The speaker will be Carolynn Harvey, whose talk will be on ‘Sugar Paste Cake Decorating’. The meeting will be held at Scaynes Hill Millennium Centre.
