Scheme to transform garden waste into compost

A huge discount scheme on units that can transform garden waste into compost has been announced.

The scheme follows a successful partnership bid with all seven local and district and borough councils to the Government backed organisation WRAP '“ the Waste and Resources Action Programme.

The deal has the potential to divert 13,500 tonnes of green garden waste a year from landfill, and that could save 600,000 a year on disposal costs.

WRAP has also awarded the County Council funding to continue promoting its 'Real Nappy' initiative which is also designed to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

Special offers include a cash-back for parents who sign up to the initiative, a free starter pack worth more than 100 which contains a wide selection of cotton nappies, biodegradable nappy liners, wipes, and a handy bag for wet nappies, or four weeks free nappy laundry service.

The initiative is designed to make a serious dent in the 82,000 disposable nappies that are buried every day in landfill sites.
