School calls for more to sign petition

MORE than 200 people have signed a petition supporting a 20mph school zone in Steyning.

But organisers at Steyning Primary School are looking for more support to get the message across.

People have until Saturday to sign the petition, either at the school, in Shooting Field, or online at epetition.westsussex.public-i.tv/epetition_core/view/steyning20mph

Governor Ian Nichols is chairman of the community links committee, which looks into wider community issues like getting the children safely to school.

He said: “So far, we have well over 200 signatures in support but we’d really like a lot more to convince the county council that the residents of Steyning strongly support this proposal.”

Mr Nichols said Steyning Primary School had conducted a survey of pupils’ parents and carers earlier in the year.

“The survey was about how children travel to school and there was a large response wishing to see improved road safety for children walking to and from school,” he explained.

Discussions were held with Steyning Parish Council, as well as the district and county councils, and it became clear a good starting point for the campaign would be a reduced speed limit on the principle approach roads to the school.

The petition was launched at the school gates on November 4, as well as on the county council’s e-petition website. Leaflets were delivered to residents living close to the school who might be affected by the lower speed limit.
