School earns community award

BEXHILL High School is at the "heart of the community", and that's offical.

Bexhill High School has just received the coveted Schools Curriculum Award for the quality of its working relationship with members of the community. The school is one of 251 in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales to be granted the national award.

Recently, two assessors appointed by the Schools Curriculum Awards, an independently-sponsored body that for 20 years has validated the award, visited the school.

Director of community relations, Dave Cowley said: "In our submission we had to detail all the activities we, as a school, organise with various sections of our community.

"This included our excellent links with business; our commitment to an international outlook; the work that our Arts, PE and Humanities faculties have done in curriculum projects with the community; our participation in the Serpollet project and our holiday clubs and children's university.

"We were delighted to show the assessors how our students' learning is directly or indirectly enhanced by our partnerships with so many different individuals and organisations outside the school."

Head teacher Mike Conn said: "We are grateful to so many people, our parents, our governors and staff who give of their time to the benefit of us all. The links we have with the community, both locally and internationally, help to make even more stimulating and successful learning environment."

The school has been invited to send two students and two adults to the official celebration of their achievement, where they will join with the other 251 winners, in collecting their certificate from the Schools Curriculum Award organisers.

The event, which is to take place on Tuesday, June 11, will be hosted at the Tate Modern, with HRH The Duke of Gloucester present as a special guest to congratulate and meet representatives of the winning school.
