School gets thousands from hotel initiative

Hotel staff who took on the world have helped Walberton children to make sense of it.

The employees of the Hilton Avisford Park hotel visited the village's primary school to present a 3,000 cheque from their latest global initiative.

The donation will be used by the school's headteacher Maureen Shilliday to supply every class with a complete new range of reading books.

"It will be the passport to enable the children to travel far and wide in their love of reading with the most up-to-date story books and reference books to support their learning.

"The teachers are really excited about being able to go off and select new books. We have so many children who really love reading. The money will truly have an impact on every single person in the school," she said.

The money was raised from the hotel's around the world in a day challenge in June.

Malcolm Allan, Hilton Avisford Park's general manager, said: "We're absolutely delighted to be able to support the Walberton and Binsted School and I'm thrilled our challenge proved to be such a good fundraiser."

The hotel's fundraising day was part of a national effort by the company to collectively travel a total of 24,901.55 miles, the circumference of the earth.

In Arundel, sponsored miles were covered by either walking a mile or by using gym equipment over seven hours in a competitive team challenge.

Hotel staff, members of the public and a host of schoolchildren managed to cover 219.4 miles towards the grand total of more than 28,536 miles.

The fundraising day was held together with Walberton school's summer fete to ensure plenty of entertainment on offer.
