School now has field good factor

THE grass has suddenly got greener for childeren at Chantry Community Primary School in Barrack Road, thanks to completion of a project to rejuvenate the school playing field.

The area has been out of bounds since last September after it became impossible to maintain a turf surface on the field due to it sitting above rubble from a property demolished several years ago.

Dry weather and active young feet quickly wore away the grass and efforts to patch it became increasingly fraught with difficulty.

But after headteacher Christine Dickens mentioned the problem at a sports day, parents and the community rallied round to help provide a solution.

Help and materials at cost or in kind has seen the field transformed during the winter and when children return from their Easter holidays later this month, it will be with a summer of games and play times on lush turf in prospect.

School business manager Jo Roadway said: “The children are thrilled to have their field back in use again.

“We’re deeply grateful to all who have helped make it possible.

“We’d especially like to thank Veolia Environmental Services for providing the compost, P J Skips for providing subsidised soil, C B Winter and Sons for providing subsidised turf and East Sussex County Council grounds maintenance for its support.

“We’d also like to record our appreciation to the Sussex Bed Centre for helping out with overspill staff parking and say a big thank you to all our neighbours for their patience with extra traffic and noise during the week that the work was completed.”
