School pupils look forward to mighty oaks

A group of 12 Steyning Grammar pupils spent Tuesday morning scattering more than 3,000 acorns to celebrate a joint project between the Wiston Estate and the school.

The Wiston Estate collected 25 sacks of acorns from English oak trees which were planted by the children over a five-acre site of open land which in time will create a new woodland area in Trickles Wood, near Wiston. The aim is they will be able to visit it with their own children and grandchildren.

The Wiston Estate has recently made an adjoining area of woodland available to Steyning Grammar School to enhance its outdoor education programmes and allow it to offer Forest School sessions to pupils.

These allow the children to work and learn outside, in an outdoor classroom environment, which has proved valuable particularly for those with low self esteem and special needs.
