School pupils take the controls of 50 hi-tech visitors

Robots have arrived at a Bognor Regis school hall.

The electronic wizards will be used in Laburnum Grove Junior School's future information communication technology lessons.

The pair of hi-tech helpers will enable pupils to develop the skills they learned during a recent day of wonder.

This saw some 50 robots, hired for the occasion, roaming around the school's hall to make any visitors think that they had walked into a NASA space laboratory.

The robots were firmly under the command of the school's 51 Year Five pupils aged nine and ten.

The children began by learning basic programming skills needed to make the robots move forwards and turn.

They used software to implement the commands before the pupils applied their knowledge to help their robot complete a driving challenge.

Pip Otton, the school's headteacher, said: "Pupils needed to use their problem-solving skills and work as a team to navigate their robot around a complicated maze.

"Another activity required pupils to programme the robot to 'park' using an ultrasonic detector."

The most successful team earned prizes before the children were shown by an outside specialist how the robots could be programmed to dance to music.
